Building Trust and Connection in Remote Teams
Remote doesn't have to mean disconnected...

Remote work has transformed how we connect, collaborate, and grow as teams. Working remotely from South Africa has significantly improved my work-life balance. I have never felt more appreciated, supported, and valued within my role. This October, I will be spending time in the UK to get to know the team in person, which proves that remote does not mean disconnected.
Here are five ways to keep engagement strong across borders:
1. Communication is Key
Over-communicating updates, challenges, milestones, and wins ensures no one feels left out. We make a conscious effort to connect beyond chat messages by prioritising video calls on MS Teams. These conversations help build trust through openness and transparency.
2. Create Routines
Routines provide structure and help maintain motivation. Starting the week with clarity on tasks and ending it by celebrating achievements creates rhythm and recognition. Regular team get-togethers, whether monthly or quarterly, further strengthen connections.
3. Prioritise Recognition
Small gestures of gratitude and recognition have a big impact. Celebrating both small and significant wins boosts morale and reinforces that each team member’s contribution is valued.
4. Invest in Connection
Remote work does not have to feel isolating. Weekly check-ins, monthly one-to-ones, and informal virtual coffee catch-ups foster genuine relationships. These touchpoints remind us that we are part of a shared purpose, not just working in isolation.
5. Empower Ownership
Micromanagement undermines engagement. Giving people the space to own their work fosters independence and motivation. Encouraging autonomy has been a major driver of our team’s success.
As we expand, we are also building a support office function in South Africa, which makes these principles even more important. Collaboration, recognition, and connection are the glue that keeps us moving forward together.
Remote work is not just about where you are, it is about how you feel while working. For me, I have never felt more connected.
